Capoeira
Capoeira Scene
Youth Scene provides Capoeira training to young people from all backgrounds, abilities and ages.
We use this exciting Afro-Brazilian martial art, game, and culture to support students' learning, motivation and confidence building.
Practicing Capoeira can help to increase fitness; improve strength, co-ordination and flexibility; learn self-defence; and relieve stress.
Capoeira training is a journey of self-development that demands personal discipline and dedication. The committed Capoeirista will progress at a steady pace, gradually taking on the philosophy, culture, and energy of Capoeira. By developing their skills in the game of Capoeira, students may cultivate their physical, mental and spiritual well-being and learn to negotiate the game of life in the process.
Our Capoeira instructor Sabu has over five years’ experience of teaching Capoeira through his work with ACER Capoeira. He has trained under Mestre Celso (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), and his son Professor Bicudo (UK). Sabu is also highly skilled in related fields such as traditional Capoeira music; Samba; the making of instruments; plus the history and philosophy behind Capoeira.
Here’s what some of our students say about Capoeira:
What is Capoeira?
“Capoeira is a way to express yourself using your body. Capoeira is martial arts and dance all in one. Capoeira has two main styles. They are Angola and Regional.”

Where is Capoeira from?
“Capoeira was developed in Brazil over 500 years ago by African slaves and native Brazilians due to slavery and oppression. The slaves were taken by boat across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to Brazil by the Portuguese. Capoeira was created by slaves who weren’t allowed to bring their own rituals and culture with them because their masters wanted complete control over their servants. It was made by the slaves to free themselves but no one knows its exact origins because official records of slavery have been destroyed."

What happens in Capoeira?
“Capoeira is a martial art and you can get fit. Capoeira is fun when you play music with it. We usually play the Berimbau (a string instrument) which is the main instrument in Capoeira. The Atabaque is the name of the drum. The Pandero is the name of the tambourine. People stand in a circle called a roda and they play the music, clap and sing. This gives you energy to play. Capoeira is made for all people to free themselves.”
